Keep Your Blooms Beautiful Longer

Valentine’s Day flowers are more than just a gift — they’re a heartfelt expression of love. Whether you received classic roses, romantic ranunculus, or a lush seasonal mix, proper care will help your arrangement stay fresh and beautiful for as long as possible.

At Little Petal Farm, we design every bouquet with premium blooms and intentional care. Follow these simple steps to extend the life of your Valentine’s arrangement and enjoy your flowers even longer.

1. Start with a Clean Vase Environment

If your flowers arrived wrapped, transfer them into a clean vase right away.

Tips:

  • Wash the vase with warm soapy water.
  • Rinse thoroughly to remove bacteria.
  • Bacteria is the #1 cause of early wilting.

If your arrangement is already designed in a vase, you’re one step ahead — just focus on keeping the water fresh.

2. Refresh the Water Daily

Fresh water is essential to flower longevity.

Daily Care Routine:

  • Check water levels every day.
  • Add fresh, cool water as needed.
  • Replace the water entirely every 2–3 days if possible.

For foam arrangements, slowly pour water directly into the foam to keep it saturated.

3. Trim Stems for Better Hydration

If you have a wrapped bouquet or loose stems:

  • Trim stems at a 45° angle.
  • Cut about ½ inch off the bottom.
  • Use sharp floral shears or scissors.
  • Re-cut every 2–3 days.

This allows flowers to drink water more efficiently.

4. Use Flower Food

Flower food makes a big difference.

Why it matters:

  • Provides nutrients.
  • Keeps water clean.
  • Extends bloom life.

If you run out, you can make a simple mix:

  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • A few drops of bleach

5. Keep Flowers in the Right Spot

Location matters more than most people think.

Avoid placing arrangements near:

  • Direct sunlight
  • Heat vents
  • Fireplaces
  • Electronics
  • Drafty windows

Best placement:

  • Cool room
  • Indirect light
  • Away from fruit (ripening fruit releases ethylene gas that ages flowers faster)

6. Remove Wilting Blooms

As flowers naturally age:

  • Remove wilted blooms promptly.
  • Pull off dying foliage below the waterline.
  • This prevents bacteria from spreading to fresh flowers.

Your arrangement will continue to look full and fresh.

7. Special Care by Flower Type

Some Valentine favorites have unique needs:

Roses

  • Remove guard petals (outer petals) if bruised.
  • Re-cut stems if heads droop.

Tulips

  • Continue growing toward light.
  • Use less water — they drink quickly.

Hydrangea

  • Very thirsty — keep water high.
  • Mist blooms lightly if they look limp.

Ranunculus & Anemones

  • Prefer shallow water.
  • Keep cool for longest life.

8. How Long Will My Valentine Flowers Last?

Average vase life varies by bloom:

  • Roses: 5–7 days
  • Tulips: 5–7 days
  • Ranunculus: 5–8 days
  • Carnations: 10–14 days
  • Mixed arrangements: 5–10 days

With proper care, many arrangements last well beyond a week.
